Between modern information technology and established methods, new opportunities and old problems of spacious and financial limits, libraries are opening up to the digital world. At the same time, a digital library is more than a list of downloadable digital documents. Ideally, it connects the creation, organisation, management, distribution and conservation of digital object collections and enables access to their content - time- and location-independent. The present thesis is a review of the state of actual concepts and technologies of digital libraries and tries to represent them in an informative and clear while considering focal points of Information Science - scientific information, public information, information management and information industry. It gives an overview on current and future possibilities and developments of digital libraries. Firstly, current library models are compared to each other and differences and communities between them are illustrated. At the end of this part stands a detailed description and differentiaton of digital libraries to reference libraries and their online catalogues and the examination of their basic elements and architecture. Subsequent, social functions and issues of digitial libraries, which to some extent influence the onset of online offerings and the design of their application functions, are surveyed. The changes in scientific information, accelerated by the learned journal crisis, is traced along with other central points of digital libraries - economic efficiency, copyright and technical aspects. The last part of the thesis analyses technical innovations and applications of digital libraries. Practical examples form the digital counterparts of the Portuguese National Library and the Spanish cultural institution Instituto Cervantes serve as demonstrations. Both are internationally recognised information centres: the Portuguese Biblioteca Nacional Digital has denoted 400.000 hits in 2007, the websites of the Instituto Cervantes are visited by about 20 million users each year. The subsection "archivation and distribution" deals with the organisation of digital objects, security aspects, document servers and document delivery services. "Access and control" describes, amongst others, the digital access to knowledge (information access) and its processing (information retrieval). The chapter "User-centring and cooperation" goes into the possibilities of customising applications in digital libraries: identity management, interoperability between functions and libraries, social software and involving users in the library work in the course of new web developments as well as e-learning-components that can be integrated in a digital library.
