In a general sense, Geography deals with a number of thematically differently defined phenomena on the surface of the earth (as just a glance at any map show). These phenomena which come into contact with, overlap and restrict one another. Their chronological, hierarchic and spatial co-existence are affected by man and nature, who interact and initiate processes which in turn alter their different environments. Seen from this point of view, the task of the geographer may be defined as drawing attention to the complexity of this reality and explaining how mankind, in the course of his cultural evolution, has been able to assert himself by adaptation and formation of structures.

Due to spatial, technical and legal constraints it is not always possible to dispense with sewers in areas which have been set aside as a groundwater drinking supply. In instances where a municipal drainage flows through an area currently being used for water abstraction, drains and sewers must be planned and built so as not to cause long-term changes in groundwater quality. This notably applies to catchment areas being used for public withdrawal of groundwater. Performance of risk assesments prior to construction of the drainage system presents a difficult challenge. The challenge is to determine the manner in which the sewer will be constructed and the saftey precautions taken during construction. Additionally, the sewers operation after construction should be taken into account with particular regard to its ability to protect ground water resources. These decisions must be made with regard to the balance between the cost structure of implementation and groundwater ecology. Against this background, an expert system called GRABWAS was developed which assesses the risk of groundwater endangerment during construction and operation of sewers in water protection areas and helps selecting the best possible adapted drainage system. This tool can be applied to specific cases and considers local underground-specific conditions when it comes to assessing the risk.

This dissertation analyses the level of pollution of soils and sources in the Vosges and Black Forest with the objective of facilitating a future regionalisation of the condition of the soils via a chemical analysis of surface sources. As a result of this, the complexity of surveys could be reduced in comparison to present-day research methods currently practised in Europe.

The study area is an example of the development of xerotherme biocoenosis in ancient floodplains due to human disturbances. The protection of the habitat and its bioceonosis raises conservation and technique-specific Problems. It also stays in oppositon to the efforts of the dynamical protection of the area whose aim is the renaturation of the floodplain with focus on the re-establishment of the hydrological and morphological processes.
In this study I investigate the ecological significance of xerotherme plant associations with regard to their importance for nature conservation. The area under investigation is located in Baden-Wuerttemberg near Hartheim (southern Upper Rhine) with emphasis on the Käfigeckengrund-Region by Grißheim.
Historical, microclimatical, edaphical, biogeographical and ecological items are included in this study. Surveys on flora, vegetation, soil, microclima, seed rain and seed bank were carried out between april 2000 and november 2001 in the study area with focus on the dry grasslands, schrubs and xerotherme forests.
Interactions and correlations among these parameters were examined by means of statistical and non-statistical methods and illustrated using graphics and tables.
Based on criteria such as rareness and spatial diversity and under consideration of the complexity of interactions which hamper the regeneration of the biocoenosis is to be concluded that the study area has a great value for nature conservation.

Quantifizierung diffuser Fest- und Nährstoffeinträge aus Ackerflächen in Fließgewässersysteme - Eine Untersuchung am Beispiel des Theel-Ill-Einzugsgebietes, Saarland
Kiepurning, Alexandra
Kubiniok, Jochen
ddc:550

The primary aim of this study was to analyse the correlation between topographical features and chemical composition with the changes in wettability and the surface free energy of microstructured titanium (Ti) surfaces. Periodic microscale structures on the surface of Ti substrates were fabricated via direct laser interference patterning (DLIP). Radio-frequency magnetron sputter deposition of ultrathin nanostructured hydroxyapatite (HA) films was used to form an additional nanoscale grain morphology on the microscale-structured Ti surfaces to generate multiscale surface structures. The surface characteristics were evaluated using atomic force microscopy and contact angle and surface free energy measurements. The structure and phase composition of the HA films were investigated using X-ray diffraction. The HA-coated periodic microscale structured Ti substrates exhibited a significantly lower water contact angle and a larger surface free energy compared with the uncoated Ti substrates. Control over the wettability and surface free energy was achieved using Ti substrates structured via the DLIP technique followed by the deposition of a nanostructured HA coating, which resulted in the changes in surface chemistry and the formation of multiscale surface topography on the nano- and microscale.

Influence of Water Depth and Slope on Roughness : Experiments and Roughness Approach for Rain-on-Grid Modeling

Two-dimensional (2D) models have become a well-established tool for channel flow, as
well as rain-induced overland flow simulations. In channel flow simulations, slopes are usually less
than a few percent and water depths are over several meters, while overland flow simulations show
steep slopes and flow of a few centimeters. Despite these discrepancies, modelers transfer roughness
coefficients, validated for channel flow, to overland flow. One purpose of this study is to verify
whether roughness values from the literature are also valid for overland flow simulations. Laboratory
experiments with different degrees of bed roughness, various discharges and a range of experimental
flume slopes were carried out. For a given discharge, water depth was measured, and bed roughness
was derived. Experimental results reveal that roughness shows no clear dependence on slope but
is strongly dependent on water depth for vegetated surfaces. To verify the influence of different
roughness approaches, they were implemented in a 2D model. A comparison of different simulation
results indicates differences in the hydrograph. Here, consideration of water depth-related roughness
coefficients leads to retention and translation effects. With the results of this study, modelers may
enhance the precision of the hydraulic component in overland flow simulations.

In Germany, the incidence of cervical cancer, a disease caused by human papillomaviruses (HPV), is higher than in neighboring European countries. HPV vaccination has been recommended for girls since 2007. However, it continues to be significantly less well received than other childhood vaccines, so its potential for cancer prevention is not fully realized. To find new starting points for improving vaccination rates, we analyzed pseudonymized routine billing data from statutory health insurers in the PRÄZIS study (prevention of cervical carcinoma and its precursors in women in Saarland) in the federal state Saarland serving as a model region. We show that lowering the HPV vaccination age to 9 years led to more completed HPV vaccinations already in 2015. Since then, HPV vaccination rates and the proportion of 9- to 11-year-old girls among HPV-vaccinated females have steadily increased. However, HPV vaccination rates among 15-year-old girls in Saarland remained well below 50% in 2019. Pediatricians vaccinated the most girls overall, with a particularly high proportion at the recommended vaccination age of 9–14 years, while gynecologists provided more HPV catch-up vaccinations among 15-17-year-old girls, and general practitioners compensated for HPV vaccination in Saarland communities with fewer pediatricians or gynecologists. We also provide evidence for a significant association between attendance at the children´s medical check-ups “U11” or “J1” and HPV vaccination. In particular, participation in HPV vaccination is high on the day of U11. However, obstacles are that U11 is currently not financed by all statutory health insurers and there is a lack of invitation procedures for both U11 and J1, resulting in significantly lower participation rates than for the earlier U8 or U9 screenings, which are conducted exclusively with invitations and reminders. Based on our data, we propose to restructure U11 and J1 screening in Germany, with mandatory funding for U11 and organized invitations for HPV vaccination at U11 or J1 for both boys and girls.
